Current research
The main objective of my PhD thesis is to characterize local interneurons (LNs) within the Antennal Lobe (AL) of the Honeybee. The AL is the primary olfactory centre of the insect brain and plays a critical role in odor discrimination, by modulating and / or sharpening the received sensory input, before it is transferred onwards to higher processing stages. LNs surely play an important role in this process, but in fact we know very little about the underlying mechanisms that arise from the neurons' electrical, morphological, and histochemical characteristics. In order to better understand the role of LNs in the AL network. I combine single cell electrophysiology with calcium imaging and immunostaining.
