Current research
The known connection between the primary olfactory area of the honeybee and various higher brain areas is from the projection neurons, conveying olfactory information from the antennal lobes to the mushroom bodies.

Whether there are also projections in the other direction (top-down) is currently unknown. There are two types of neurons that are likely candidates to have such an orientation, namely the VUM neurons and the ALF1-neuron. So far we do not know the identity of top-down neurons, what kind of information they convey and what impact they have on olfactory processing. In my studies I am trying to
elucidate the function of these feedback neurons.
