Current research
For my Bachelor Thesis I am working on the Drosophila olfactory system. I want to find out more about the receptive range of the Or13a receptor. It is known that Or13a ORNs map to the DC2 glomerulus, but not much is known about the odor information that Or13a ORNs mediate. My work is focussed on classes of odors that Or13a responds to and how wide this receptor is tuned. This work is done in Drosophila because here genetic tools are available to modify the fly such that imaging experiments with flourescent dyes are handy. Furthermore, Drosophila has only ~ 50 ORNs with many of those ORNs already characterized. So, it will soon be possible to gather information about the sensory input of all ORNs. Then further research can be done on higher brain regions.
