Current research

My current focus is on the neurobiology of associative learning. By doing neuropharmacological experiments on behaving bees I am trying to find the neurochemical requirements and location of associative learning in the bee brain. I am also interested in understanding complex behaviours such as foraging and communication. My ambition is to bridge the gap between neurobiological mechanisms and complex behaviours. In the last couple of years we have been analysing honeybee foraging and context-dependency of the bees choice. We use inside and outside net cages and free-flight setups where we provide artificial flowers as well as conditioning setups with fixed bees.
