I am interested in the coding of olfactory information. By using calcium imaging, I investigate the representation of complex odors in the antennal lobe (AL) of the honeybee. Unrevealing the effect of lateral inhibition, across the output neurons of the AL, the projection neurons (PNs), helps us to understand the contribution of the AL network to olfactory coding. By applying different odor components and their mixtures. I am searching for the physiological basis that enables the recognition of odor components in their mixtures. Odor responses of glomeruli and single PNs are recorded using 2 photon excitation. Together with Paul Szyszka, I investigate mixture interactions on inter- and intraglomerular level.
