Current research

Drosophila melanogaster expresses 40 and 50 types of Olfactory receptor Neurons (ORNs) on its antennae and maxillary palps. Each of these neurons carries one specific type of odorant receptor (OR). ORs are differently tuned to odor molecules and thus may be characterized by their individual molecular receptive range (MRR) and its width (specific vs. broadly tuned). Since different ORs may be activated by single odorants in different manner, OR response profiles are largely overlapping and shape the global response profile.

In order to better understand the constraints underlying global odor response profiles, we need to characterize the function of the entire set of ORs, embedded in their original system. Making use of the ability to genetically modify Drosophila melanogaster, I follow an in-vivo approach combining calcium imaging and high throughput robotic techniques to automatically apply a large number of single odorants and mixtures.
